Dental insurance

Dental insurance is a type of health coverage that helps pay for routine and major dental care, unlike medical insurance which usually excludes most dental work.

Coverage Levels

Plans typically divide services into three tiers:

  • Preventive (100% covered): Cleanings, exams, X-rays, fluoride, sealants.

  • Basic (50-80% covered): Fillings, extractions, root canals, simple gum treatments.

  • Major (30-50% covered): Crowns, bridges, dentures, implants (if included).

Common Plan Types

  • PPO: Largest dentist networks; use in-network for lowest costs, out-of-network okay at higher rates.

  • DHMO/HMO: Smaller networks; lower premiums/copays but must use assigned dentists and get referrals.

  • Indemnity: Pay first then submit claims; flexible but higher premiums.

Plans have deductibles ($50-100/year), coinsurance (your % share), copays (flat fees), and annual maximums ($1,000-2,000). Cosmetic work (whitening, veneers) is usually excluded.
