Affordable Care Act Health Insurance (under 65)
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is the federal law that created the Health Insurance Marketplace where individuals and families can buy private health insurance.
What ACA health insurance is
Plans are sold through HealthCare.gov or your state’s marketplace and must cover essential health benefits like doctor visits, hospitalization, maternity, mental health, and prescriptions. Plans are labeled Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum based on how much of your medical costs the plan pays on average (Bronze pays the least, Platinum the most). Catastrophic plans with very low premiums and very high deductibles are available only to some people (mainly under 30 or with hardship exemptions).
Help paying for ACA coverage
Most marketplace enrollees get a premium tax credit (subsidy) that lowers the monthly premium, based on household income and family size. The amount of help you get depends on your income: report income carefully, because even small changes can affect your subsidy and what you might owe or get back at tax time.
